Casablanca is not the Morocco on the postcards and we will not pretend otherwise — it is a working city of four million people, and most travellers see it for half a morning on the way to somewhere else. What it does have is the Hassan II mosque, built out over the Atlantic with a minaret of 210 metres, and one of the very few in the country that non-Muslims can enter.

Starting here rather than in Marrakech means the whole route runs in one direction — Rabat, Fez, the desert, then Marrakech at the end — instead of doubling back. That is worth more to the trip than a day in the city.
