The Todra is the narrowest thing on any of our routes. The limestone walls run up to about 300 metres and at the tightest point they are roughly ten metres apart, with the river and the road sharing the floor between them. It is cold in there even in August, which after Merzouga is the point.
We stop and walk it rather than driving through — twenty minutes on foot covers the narrows, and there are usually climbers on the east wall to watch, since the gorge is one of the better-known limestone routes in North Africa.
It falls on the day between the desert and the Dades valley, which is the day the landscape does the most work: dunes at breakfast, palm groves by mid-morning, a canyon at lunch and the eroded red rock of the Dades by dinner.
